From Incheon, South Korea.
Currently based in Stuttgart, Germany.
Focusing on sculpture, performance, and conceptual art.
About
After graduating from the Department of Art at Kyung Hee University in 2015, I am currently taking a Diploma course at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart in Germany. As a member of installation sculptor Christian Jankowski's class, I am taking an example of his worldwide creative activities to expand my knowledge of international art scenes, including Korea, while searching for my position in contemporary art as an artist.
My work identifies socio-cultural ills that individuals must face within society. I approach the world with childlike curiosity, but as I get closer to truth, innocence turns into a bitter sense of reality. To express this process as an artwork, I use body parts as the main object of my works, which plays a role in helping the audience to discover empathy and connection to the work more efficiently.
The artworks represented through the human body express that a social problem is an everyday reality facing not only the victims but also the entire modern generation. It is particularly important to me not to lose my humor and satirical attitude when dealing with heavy subjects. This is because I believe that the harsh reality can be seen more clearly only when there is a contemplative distance through humor. These topics are a link throughout my works and a tool to share the power of paradox.
I focus on visually powerful portrayals of individuals or characters to convey my themes. To this end, performance and conceptual art are my major genres, but in detail, media and graphic design, such as sculpture and installation, photography, and video, are freely used.
Art Statement
"The connecting link between all my projects is working with the power of irony. I express my social and political experiences through realistic, just as absurd video and sculptural works. A huge topic that I constantly engage myself with is the difficult situation of my home country. I've witnessed that South Korea has been poorly treated by other powerful nations. I had to accept this fact, and the irony is my way of dealing with it. Of course, this could be just another provocation."
